Understanding Diabetes: Types, Symptoms and Management

Diabetes affects over 77 million Indians. Learn the key differences between Type 1 and Type 2, common warning signs, and how to manage the condition effectively.

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterised by high blood sugar levels. India is the diabetes capital of the world, with over 77 million people affected. With proper management, people with diabetes can live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin. It is usually diagnosed in children and young adults and requires daily insulin therapy.

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form, accounting for around 90% of all cases. The body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use it effectively. It is strongly linked to lifestyle factors.

Gestational Diabetes develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery, but increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Excessive thirst and dry mouth
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing cuts or wounds
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet

How Is Diabetes Managed?

Management involves a combination of lifestyle changes (diet and exercise), medication or insulin, and regular monitoring of blood sugar (HbA1c). Our endocrinology team provides comprehensive diabetes care plans.

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

If you have prediabetes (HbA1c 5.7–6.4%), lifestyle intervention can delay or prevent progression to full diabetes. Losing 5–7% of body weight and getting 150 minutes of exercise per week are the most effective interventions.
